Juan del Encina (1468-1530) was widely regarded as the greatest
Spanish composer of songs during his lifetime. He also was the main
pioneer for theatrical performance in Spain, and uncharacteristically
left no liturgical music. The other composers in this anthology show
the development of these forms into the beginning of the baroque
period.
