Mathurin Forestier (fl.c.1500) has been virtually unknown prior to this recording. There is speculation that he was born around 1470, and that he worked for the French Royal court. Mention in reference works is minimal, and his credited output (3 masses, 2 motets, 4 chansons) in the present liner notes differs with e.g. the New Grove article. At any rate, his style evokes direct comparisons with Josquin and Mouton, and he seems to have been a somewhat younger colleague of theirs. The present masses do survive in multiple copies throughout Europe.
