This recording presents the 29 motets contained within the Geistliche Chormusik of 1648 in varying combinations of voices and instruments. Some of the motets are performed chorally, some soloistically. Because of the possibility of differing interpretations in the distribution of vocal / instrumental parts, a number of motets are offered in alternative versions at the end of CD2 (items 10-18). The motets were written over a number of years, right up to publication at the end of the thirty years war which had devastated Germany. They showcase approaches to composition ranging from a more concerted style to more conventional motet-like all vocal pieces. One of their interesting features is the way in which the German language is employed to convey subtle expressivity.
