Juan de Araujo (1646-1712) was one of the leading Baroque
composers of South America. He worked most of his life in Sucre,
Bolivia.
The most important South American Baroque composer was Domenico
Zipoli (1688-1726). He diverted from a career path in Rome to take
up missionary work in Paraguay. It was only much later that it
was discovered he had left compositions in the hands of the Natives,
who had preserved them. Zipoli is featured often in this series.
The other South American Baroque composer of major consequence
is Tomás Torrejon y Velasco (1644-1728).
Another recording devoted to his work:
- Torrejon y Velasco: La Purpura de la Rosa
- Ensemble La Cappella / Orchestre baroque du Clemencic Consort
- René Clemencic
