Giovanni Battista Vitali (1632-1692) was a member of the Bolognese school of violinist-composers which runs from Cazzati through Corelli. His works continue to make reference to several older forms. The second portion of this program comes from Balletti e Capricci, Op. 8 (1683), and the rather sketchy program information (on what is otherwise a top-notch production, from the sound to the paper) implies that this is the complete Op. 7 & Op. 8.
The present performance, giving no further information on performer identities, is arranged for the unusual combination of recorder, oboe & continuo. Although one might prefer a violin-based introduction to this composer, the present performance is actually very good in conception, capturing the music well.
