This program is organized around Les Champion des Dames
by Martin Le Franc (c.1410-1461), one of the most influential poems
of the era. Le Franc argues for the honor of the female gender,
part of a debate which raged at that time, and also mentions the
famous composers Dufay & Binchois. Binchois in particular set
pro-feminine texts, such as the famous Dueil angoisseus of
Cristine de Pizan. Les Champion des Dames is fully twenty-four
thousand lines, so that only a subset is read for this program.
Note: The liner notes for this recording list 22 tracks, whereas
the CD contains 20, as per above.
