In addition to the mass by Gallus, this recording presents the complete surviving sacred music of Krystof Harant (1564-1621), a Bohemian nobleman killed in the Hapsburg retaliation following the Battle of White Mountain in 1621. Harant studied under Regnart, but was a professional soldier and politician rather than a musician by trade. Gallus' mass is based upon Verdelot's motet Sancta Maria virgo virginum, and Harant's on Marenzio's madrigal Dolorosi martyr.
