Lodovico da Viadana (c.1560-1627) was generally considered a
marginal figure at the time, although he did hold appointments in
Mantua and elsewhere. Unusually for the era, he was a formal cleric.
The canzonette was a light genre developing out of the villanella and
which is seen increasingly as an integral part of the development of
the new monody which was so important to the
early baroque. The present volume, composed in 1594, is Viadana's most
significant in the genre.
