This is a recording of a Mass for Christmas, interspersing chant with polyphony in all-male vocal performance. The polyphonic selections are thought to have been composed by Leonin (fl.1160-1170), the predecessor of Perotin in Paris. This is a classic recording reissued at mid-price, and shows Ensemble Organum at their best.

An entire recital devoted to Leonin:

Magister Leoninus
Sacred Music from 12th century Paris
Red Byrd / Cappella Amsterdam - John Potter & Richard Wistreich
Hyperion 66944

Ensemble Organum's later recording of this repertory:

École Notre Dame
Messe de la Nativité de la Vierge
Ensemble Organum - Marcel Pérès
Harmonia Mundi 901538

And a similar program from this era, in a different performance style:

Haec Dies
Easter at Notre Dame Paris, c.1220
Les Six
