Mateu Fletxa (1481-1553) was the first Spanish composer to
develop the Ensalada genre to a high level of formal perfection.
His work continued to influence subsequent generations of composers,
including in the madrigal genre.
The term ensalada is derived from singing simultaneous lines in
different languages; the material is generally derived from Christmas
allegories, occupying a position between art & folk music. In
the hands of Fletxa (Matteo Flecha, the elder), these allusions
reach a high degree of subtlety and pervasiveness.
