This discography has now been broken down by individual work, and researched to a certain degree, both for all the material we have detailed here and in our usual sources, and for possible misattributions. Although a goodly amount of work has gone into this effort, it is more than a mere possibility that some recordings are missing. Please advise me of this, if you have further information. Even as things stand, this listing should prove useful.
Last update: 30 June 2024
Discographic material has been collected to this stage with substantial help from Pierre-F. Roberge.
Todd M. McCombPierre de la Rue (c.1460-1518) was the leading composer at the court of Burgundy during the golden age of Franco-Flemish polyphony, and arguably the last great exponent of the medieval aesthetic in music. La Rue's output forms the third stage of a three-step development of musical form by his generation, following upon the work of Obrecht and then Josquin. While some research suggests that La Rue may have been the oldest of the three by a few years, he was also the last to develop a mature style. While La Rue did not achieve the subsequent fame of Josquin, it was he who perfected the formal innovations of the era, reinjecting them with a refined & subtle sense of variety. La Rue's mass cycles in the fully developed post-Obrecht style dwarf Josquin's in number, and while the priorities of text-setting and simpler expression in Josquin's late output became the rallying cry of the high Renaissance, it was La Rue whose output punctuated the end of the medieval era.
La Rue was the most important composer of his generation not to work in Italy. He worked in the North, outside of the full spotlight of modernity, and was the last major composer to have the most important part of his output preserved in hand-copied manuscripts. Despite being featured by Petrucci, the best sources for La Rue's music are those copied by the famous Pierre Alamire (c.1470-1534) in Burgundy. Given this unity of presentation & the proximity to his work, La Rue's catalog shows the least confusion among major composers of the era. He dominates the Burgundian manuscripts of the period, in both sacred & secular music. In fact, his influence on notation itself can be perceived, as he was the first to regularly use written accidentals and to extend ranges consistently outside the gamut. La Rue's innovations are impressive, despite his conservative reputation, but it is his non-systematic approach to musical development which both limited his subsequent influence and provides such fertile ground for exploration today.
La Rue was almost certainly born in Tournai, and some historical references suggest a date of birth around 1452, earlier than the previously popular estimate of 1460. However, more doubt has been thrown onto that date, and it seems La Rue may have been born later. He has been traced with differing levels of confidence to Brussels (1469/70), Ghent (1471/2), Nieuwpoort (1472/3-1477/8), Cologne (1488/9), and s-Hertogenbosch (1489-1492). By 1492, he joined the Burgundian court chapel of the Habsburgs, first serving under Maximilian and then most famously under Marguerite of Austria. He visited Spain twice with Philip the Fair, and was forced to spend a few months in England in 1506. (Agricola died on the same trip.) In 1516, he retired to Kortrijk as perhaps the wealthiest composer of his era (with ten major prebends). Contrary to those of many of his contemporaries, La Rue's career is marked largely by stability, and most of his surviving music is dated to after his appointment in Burgundy by 1492.
Despite the relatively late date of his compositional activity, and resulting speculation that many early works may be lost, La Rue was one of the most prolific composers of the period. Perhaps due to his late start, or lost early sources, identifying trends in La Rue's compositional development is difficult. His style appears fully mature almost immediately, with a wide variety of techniques evident throughout his output. He used canon extensively, most spectacularly in the six-voice canonic mass Missa Ave sanctissima Maria, as well as imitation, cantus firmus, ostinato, homophony, and word-painting. La Rue was a pioneer of the full-fledged parody mass, and used the technique in increasingly sophisticated settings such as the Missa Incessament mon pauvre (which also incorporates a strict canon). La Rue rarely used cantus firmus technique in a systematic fashion, preferring to vary the melody when restating it, making his sense of melodic variation one of his most distinctive traits. Individual lines tend to eschew direct repetition while maintaining a distinct internal consistency & differentiation between parts, based on range and tonal orientation. The result is a uniquely unified sense of linear melodic ideas within a polyphonic whole.
While La Rue's musical technique exemplifies subtle variety, his output of major works is among the most straightforwardly systematic of the period. He was the first to write a complete Magnificat cycle, and his approximately thirty-two mass cycles constitute a survey of the most important Marian and liturgical feasts together with one of the earliest Requiems. He also left two Kyries and five Credos, including an eight-voice Credo Angeli archangeli which borrows doubly from Isaac and Binchois. La Rue's twenty-five surviving motets (including six settings of Salve regina) are technically similar to his masses, while his secular songs (which may number as many as fifty) are among the most impressive outputs of the period. His innovations are under-recognized due to the next generation's emphasis on word-painting and the madrigal style, but La Rue's songs are among his most original works. Few use the fixed forms of the previous generation, and even fewer make use of borrowed material. Indeed, he rarely borrowed material from other composers in his masses either, preferring instead to borrow from his own songs and motets. Ockeghem is the most-represented composer among the rare borrowings in his output, and apparently La Rue's main influence (in spite of suggestions that he was engaged in a one-sided competition with Josquin).
La Rue is relatively neglected today, as the Requiem mass and Missa L'homme armé are his only major works to appear with any frequency in public. His predilection for strict canon and continuous melodic variation also serves to make his music enigmatic, and of course many of his innovations were not taken up by the next generation of composers. Nonetheless, La Rue's outputs of mass cycles and songs are each among the largest & finest of the era. While his large-scale planning did not always rival prominent contemporaries, his sense of melodic integrity & individuality within polyphony was often supreme. Especially in his masses, he seems to have been concerned with adopting & perfecting & improving upon every contrapuntal technique of the period. Considering the subsequent Renaissance emphasis on a specific subset of that body of technique, La Rue's output forms something of a climax to the Franco-Flemish style.
Todd M. McComb, 11/01; slightly updated, 01/07The works list is based on Appendix D of Honey Meconi's Pierre de la Rue and Musical Life at the Habsburg-Burgundian Court, Oxford 2003. (Any subsequent departures from Meconi's list will be noted explicitly.)
Original releases, or more accurately first known releases, are numbered in the discography. Reissues, perhaps extracts or compilations or otherwise duplicated recordings, are not numbered. Re-releases of the exact same program are generally listed within the same files, not listed separately. The last section is for misattributed or unknown items.
