Introduction

L'Anthologie sonore is historicaly the second "Thesaurus" of Early Music. Discs were recorded under that label between 1933 and the mid 1950s in France, initially under the artistic direction of Curt Sachs. He was also the artistic director of the first one, "2,000 years of music, a concise history of the development of music from the earliest times through the 18th century" in the very early 1930s, just before he left Germany for France where he founded "L'Anthologie sonore". I loosely translated and adapted for the next section an article on l'Anthologie sonore written by Mr Armand Panigel that appeared in 1951 in the French periodical "Disques." Mr Panigel was then the director of the periodical.
----
The L'Anthologie sonore was born from the meeting of an already notorious musicologist and a book publisher! In the spring of 1934, the German musicologist Curt Sachs left his homeland, Germany, which was brutally under the control of Hitler; soon he met, in Paris, Mr Bernard Steele (from the publishing House "Denoël et Steele").
A few years earlier, he started a project, with the German recording company Parlophone, under the title "2,000 years of music", a widely acclaimed series of recordings that were still re-edited on LPs in the early 60s. Steele proposed to Sachs to restart his initial project, but on a wider ground. This historical series would have to keep its character of eclecticism, musical authenticity with explanatory notes accompanying each recording.
From this encounter, the first publishing editor of early music shaped and influenced on a worldwide basis, the musical taste of that era.
Right at the beginning, the collection was based on Curt Sach's principles, as follows:

  1. Ten centuries of music: a living history from the Middle Ages (IXth century) until the end of XVIIIth century
  2. Absolute musical authenticity: Do not record a work if you are to propose an ambiguous performance with instruments that are not "authentic"
  3. Musical quality: The alter ego of authenticity; so, for his golden label, he will select from each composer to be recorded, only characteristic works, reflecting the style or the era in which he lived - and from all of the works meeting those criteria, do not choose only those having a musicological interest, but adopt for these precious pages an evocative approach for our modern human sensitivity.

The same philosophy was applied to the 169 releases on the emblematic label featuring King David.
All of these recordings were not the work of a sole individual. As early as 1934, François Agostini joined the emerging company; he was the co-manager from October 1934, until the beginning of 1937, a time when Curt Sachs left France for to the USA, where he started working at the New York University in the prestigious appointment of Music Master. At that time, less than 3 years, 70 recordings were released at an average rate of 2 per month, a remarkable achievement for those times.
Mr Agostini followed the same tracks as his predecessor, even in the dark days of WW II. At the end of his appointment (1948), we owed him nearly another 70 recordings (until number 148).
He left l'Anthologie sonore at the end of 1948 to hold other responsibilities. Then in May 1949, Mr Felix Raugel took over artistic direction and all the related responsibilities since number 149. Mr Raugel was a prominent figure in French musical society.
It is curious to find how the three individuals influenced, by their personality, the production of this label, although they kept for most of the repertory, a remarkably homogeneous character and high standards.
Mr. Curt Sachs was first and foremost a musicologist. Although he initially had the last say on the initial composition of the catalogue, and so determined its limits by heading in many directions, it is noteworthy to find that his effort focused on lesser known works and styles of early masters. It is notable that, with very few exceptions, all documents related to recordings between the IXth and XVth centuries were released before number 70.
Although Agostini followed the same trends as his predecessor, it seems that he developed more affinity with works of the XVIIth and XVIIIth Centuries. As the manager of the company, he increased the length of individual works selected. He tried to release complete works, rather than excerpts, sometimes on a full side or both of the 78rpm disc, and even two, three or more discs.
At the time the article was written (1951), Panigel said it was difficult to assess Raugel's choices, but again it appears that his interest focused on the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries masters, but more the French ones. Under Raugel's artistic direction, the Anthologie sonore moved to the new medium of those days, the 33rpm LP (30, 25 & 17 cms), but traces of new works appear to have slowly faded in the middle/late 50's; later their catalogue was acquired by Disques Lucien Adè. Adès tried in 1963 to re-edit the collection, but the project was only partly realized.
For a broader overview of early music anthologies, the reader should refer to the following article: Histories in sound: Disseminating medieval music by Timothy Day, Gwendolyn Tietze and Hannah Vlcek.

Recordings were released individually, and also sold by sets of 10 discs in the U.S.A. (at least the first 130). For the standards of those days, it was a huge enterprise; 169 78rpm were released (= 69 Kg or 152 lbs, excluding albums), and in the early 1950s, about 15 LPs (7, 10, 12 in.; never released as 78rpm) were added.
At the beginning, discs were released in Europe under the label "L'Anthologie Sonore" and in the U.S.A. licensed under the label The Gramophone Shop "L'Anthologie Sonore"; many titles were also re-released in different order by Haydn Society (ca 1954). Further, many titles were released again in France circa 1963 under the label Adès "L'Anthologie Sonore", but except for Machaut's mass, none of the pre-1500 music.

Comments:
Most information for Haydn Society reissues is from "The world's encyclopedia of recorded music" (+ suppl. I, II, III): It is not clear to me if they were all released (set C, D, F, H and some LPs part of them) or if some gaps in sets (i.e. set E, F) were filled later. Information for "Disques Lucien Adès" from BN-Opale.
